With the variety of musical elements displayed through their psychedelic beats to their soulful vocals, Portugal. the Man puts on a badass show. I have seen them play at the Masquerade and the Tabernacle in Atlanta, and both Shaky Knees and Bonnaroo Music Festival. Each show they have exceeded my expectations. Portugal. The Man, led by lead singer and guitarist John Gourley, continues to push out great performances full of energy and passion. They produce such a bright and colorful sound on top of a darker upbeat rhythm making their live performances very unique and exciting. Gourley is a phenomenal front man in the way he leads the band with his energy and killer vocals. They are exceptional at keeping the flow of their performance steady by playing the entire show and not stopping for some god awful Q&A with the crowd (which drives me fucking crazy). Don’t get me wrong crowd interaction is great, but when a band talks to much it can ruin the show. Also, I’ve had the pleasure of hearing them cover some fantastic songs such as The Beatles’ “Let it Be”, “Hey Jude”, and “Helter Skelter”, Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall”, Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind”, and of course the crowd favorite “Day Man” from the show Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Every show they seem to make it a priority to play their bigger crowd pleasing songs such as “People Say”, “So American”, and “Evil Friends”. The band’s sound combined with the utilization of mesmerizing lights, lasers and psychedelic graphics equal an overall fantastic show. I highly suggest seeing them live if you get the chance, you won’t be disappointed!
